FirstPage is an EPUB and PDF reader built to make you read more. Bring your own files or download free classics inside the app, then set a daily goal in pages or minutes. Every page you read counts toward it, keeps your streak going and earns XP for a brain mascot that climbs five ranks.

The reader has five fonts, highlights in five colors, saved quotes, AI chapter summaries, translation that works offline, and read-aloud voices in six languages. If your phone keeps pulling you away, the optional lock keeps Instagram, TikTok or any app you pick closed until today’s reading is done.

Pick it if you want an EPUB reader that helps you read every day. The free plan holds one book at a time; Pro removes the limit. It doesn’t open MOBI, DJVU or comic formats.

2. ReadEra: best free reader

ReadEra opens EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, DOCX, DJVU, FB2 and more, with no ads and no in-app purchases. You get highlights, notes, collections, day and night modes and a split screen. ReadEra Premium is a separate $14.99 one-time purchase that adds Google Drive sync, read-aloud in the background, your own fonts and more highlight colors.

3. Moon+ Reader: best for power users

Moon+ Reader supports more than 20 formats plus OPDS catalogs, with dictionary lookup, translation, auto-scroll, a reading ruler and Dropbox or WebDAV sync. The free version has ads. Moon+ Reader Pro, $11.99 once, removes them and adds read-aloud, reading statistics and more themes.

4. Librera: best free read-aloud

Librera reads aloud with any text-to-speech engine on your phone, even in the free version, and works with dictionary apps and online translation. You can export notes to a file. The free app has ads; Librera PRO is $9.99 and adds sync across devices.

5. Lithium: simplest EPUB reader

Lithium does one thing: EPUB, with clean pages, highlights, notes and night and sepia themes. It’s free and ad-free. Pro, $1.99, adds Google Drive sync of your place and notes and custom themes. It doesn’t open PDF.

6. KOReader: best for e-ink and open source

KOReader is free and open source, built for e-ink readers and also available for Android. It can reflow scanned PDFs, exports highlights to Markdown, Readwise and more, and has detailed reading statistics. It isn’t on Google Play; you install it from F-Droid or GitHub.

7. Google Play Books: best for syncing your own files

Play Books lets you upload your own EPUB and PDF files and read them on any device signed in to your Google account, next to books you buy. On Android, PDF uploads have to be switched on in settings. Read Aloud only works on books whose publishers allow it.

8. PocketBook: best for DRM books and audiobooks

PocketBook reads 26 formats, including Adobe DRM and LCP books, and plays audiobooks. It has text-to-speech, dictionaries, cloud sync and no ads.

What about Kindle and Kobo?

Neither opens an EPUB file directly the way the apps above do. Kindle takes EPUB only through Send to Kindle, which converts the file into your Amazon library. Kobo can import DRM-free EPUBs, but they stay on that one device and don’t sync, and the Android app can’t import PDF. Both are best for books bought in their own stores; see the best reading apps for Android for those.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want to read more, every day: FirstPage.
  • Free, no ads, every format: ReadEra.
  • Every setting there is: Moon+ Reader.
  • Free read-aloud: Librera.
  • Just EPUB, nothing else: Lithium.
  • E-ink or open source: KOReader.
